The lapis smile fabric is so stretchy and forgiving that these shorts would fit multiple shapes and sizes well. I am 5'6" and weigh about 165. The size 31 fit great, but the size 30 would have also been fine, just a bit tighter. The size 32 would have also fit well. The shorts remind me of The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants book/movie where one pair of pants fit all of the very different sized characters well. Its been years since I have owned such a comfortable pair of jean shorts.
